A mommy makeover may involve multiple procedures designed to restore the shape and appearance of a woman’s body after childbirth. A few potential procedures that may be included in a mommy makeover include breast augmentation, breast lift, buttock augmentation, liposuction, tummy tuck, and vaginal rejuvenation.
The goal of this procedure is to increase breast size by placing breast implants under breast tissue or chest muscles. Breast augmentation can help address loss in breast size after pregnancy.
The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia. The plastic surgeon will make a single incision and separate the breast tissue from the muscles and connective tissue of the chest. Next, the surgeon will insert the implant behind the nipple and close the incision with stitches.
The risks of breast augmentation surgery include breast pain, infection, changes in implant position, implant leakage or rupture, changes in nipple and breast sensation, and growth of scar tissue that distorts the shape of the breast implant. Patients may need additional surgery to remove or replace the implants.
A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, involves removing excess skin and reshaping breast tissue to raise the breasts.
This surgery may be performed to correct sagging that occurs after pregnancy. During pregnancy, the ligaments that support the breasts may stretch as the breasts become fuller and heavier.
Women may be candidates for a breast lift if:
- Their breasts have lost shape and volume or gotten flatter and longer
- Their nipples fall below their breast creases
- Their nipples and areolae point downward
- Their areolae have stretched out of proportion to their breasts
- One of their breasts falls lower than the other
Buttock augmentation may be accomplished through implants or fat grafting.
During buttock implant surgery, a rounded, egg-shaped implant is inserted between layers of muscle. Women may need to spend a few weeks sleeping on their stomach while the incisions heal.
Patients who opt for fat grafting will have fat taken from their abdomen, hips, or thighs, and inserted into the buttocks. A second round of incisions may be necessary to achieve the desired look if the body absorbs a significant amount of the fat after surgery.
Liposuction may be performed to remove excess fat from the abdomen, buttocks, upper arms, calves and ankles, chest and back, chin and neck, and hips and thighs. Depending on which areas of the body will be treated and whether the patient has undergone other liposuction procedures in the past, the surgeon may use one of the following techniques: tumescent liposuction, ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL), laser-assisted liposuction (LAL), or power-assisted liposuction (PAL). Patients may require local, regional, or general anesthesia.
A tummy tuck involves improving the appearance of the abdomen by removing excess skin and fat and tightening connective tissue with sutures. This procedure can help remove stretch marks and excess skin in the lower abdomen below the belly button. A tummy tuck may not be an option for women who plan to lose a significant amount of weight or might consider becoming pregnant in the future.
Vaginal rejuvenation can help address laxity (or looseness) of the vagina, stress urinary incontinence, and lack of lubrication. The two types of energy-based treatments for vaginal rejuvenation include radiofrequency (RF) treatment and CO2 laser treatment. RF treatment involves using electromagnetic waves to heat the tissue, while CO2 laser treatment involves heating the upper layers of the tissue, causing tissue in the lower layers to produce more collagen.
