JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC

JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC is an injection-based dermal filler. Dermal fillers are utilized to plump up areas of the face.

JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC is used for increasing the fullness of lips and reducing facial wrinkles. It is most often used to treat the wrinkles that form on either side of the mouth, often called smile lines or laugh lines.

The main objective of this injection is to increase the volume underneath the skin so that it plumps it up. The effects of JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC are temporary, and the length of results varies by person.

JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC injections utilize hyaluronic acid, or HA, lidocaine or a local anesthetic, and water.

How JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC Works

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the human body that is most concentrated in the eye fluids and joints. It is produced by the body to lubricate and cushion the joints. When water is combined with hyaluronic acid, it converts into a material with a gel-like consistency that generates volume. When this mixture is injected under the skin, it adds volume to the tissues, which can help smooth the appearance of wrinkles.

Additionally, rather then having to undergo injections of lidocaine separate from the JUVÉDERM® injections, JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC has 0.3 percent lidocaine included in the injections. This allows for the single injection used in the appointment.

What to Expect

With JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC injections, there is little to no downtime for many patients, although swelling or bruising may occur. However, it is recommended that patients avoid exposure to the sun, any exercises that are strenuous, and beverages that contain alcohol within the first 24 hours.

Your provider will cleanse the area being treated first. Most patients tolerate the injections well, but tingling and some pressure may be felt upon injection of the material. Depending on how many injections are being administered, the appointment can take up to an hour. Results from JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC can often be seen soon after treatment. JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC is a soft tissue filler that was approved by the U.S. Food And Drug Administration in 2010.

JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC is intended for use on adults age 21 and older. It is not ideal for any individual who has an allergy to lidocaine. The effects of JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC on women who are pregnant or breastfeeding have not been established.
