Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment is a minimally invasive procedure that uses light therapy to treat wrinkles, spots, and unwanted hair.

    Benefits of IPL Treatment

IPL can be used to minimize or remove the following skin concerns:

    • Age spots
    • UV damage
    • Freckles
    • Birthmarks
    • Varicose veins
    • Broken blood vessels on the face
    • Rosacea
    • Hair on the face, neck, back, chest, legs, underarms, or bikini line

    IPL vs. Other Laser Treatments

IPL releases light of many different wavelengths, whereas a laser only directs one wavelength of light at the skin. IPL light is more scattered and less focused, allowing it to penetrate deeper into the second layer of skin without harming the outer layer of skin. This results in less damage to the skin’s surface.

During treatment, pigment cells in the skin absorb the light energy and convert it into heat, which then destroys the unwanted pigment and destroys the hair follicle.

Who is a Candidate for IPL Treatment?

IPL is best for patients with lighter skin tones and darker hair. The treatment is not recommended for people who have thick and raised keloid scars, dark skin, or light-colored hair.

Patients should speak to a skin care specialist at The Bliss Room to learn more about the procedure and to find out if they may benefit from IPL treatment.

    How to Prepare For Treatment

    Before treatment, patients should avoid:

    • Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight
    • Tanning beds
    • Waxing
    • Chemical peels
    • Collagen injections
    • Drugs that increase the risk of bleeding, such as aspirin and ibuprofen
    • Creams or other products containing vitamin A or glycolic acid

    The Equipment We Use

The Bliss Room skin practitioners use the Spectrum Laser/IPL System to provide IPL treatment. The IPL laser has four filters that can be used to reduce the appearance of acne, remove vascular and pigmented lesions, and remove unwanted hair.

What to Expect During IPL Treatment

The skincare specialist will begin by cleansing the treatment area and rubbing a cool gel onto the skin to minimize pain and discomfort. Once the patient has put on dark glasses to protect their eyes, the specialist will use the IPL device to apply light pulses to the skin.

The laser pulses feel like a rubber band snapping the skin. The entire procedure may take 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area. To see the best results, patients should plan to undergo at least three treatments, spaced about one month apart. For hair removal, patients may need six to 12 treatments.

Potential Risks And Side Effects of IPL Treatment

It’s normal to experience mild redness or swelling after treatment. These side effects typically fade within a day or two.

Other more serious risks of treatment include bruising, blistering, change in skin color, and infection.

    The Recovery Process

Patients will be able to go home immediately after the procedure. They will need to avoid exposure to direct sunlight, apply sunscreen, and avoid washing with hot water until the skin has healed. They are welcome to exercise and engage in other routine activities.
