Restylane Defyne is a dermal filler containing hyaluronic acid that helps smooth deep laugh lines, also known as nasolabial folds and marionette lines.

About Restylane

Restylane was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2003. Restylane products help combat the loss of collagen by increasing volume underneath the skin, and smoothing out and lifting skin. After treatment, patients enjoy skin that appears fuller and younger.

The main ingredient of Restylane, hyaluronic acid, adheres to the skin. The water in the acid provides volume and attracts more bodily fluids, helping to preserve the newly-added volume.

The results of a clinical study of Restylane Refyne and Restylane Defyne revealed that after one month of treatment:

  • 97% of subjects were satisfied with treatment results
  • 97% would repeat the treatment
  • 95% would recommend the products to a friend

Benefits of Restylane Defyne

As we grow older, the body stops producing collagen, leading to a loss of elasticity and the increased appearance of lines. These wrinkles commonly form in two areas: from the sides of the nose toward the corners of the mouth (nasolabial folds) and from the corners of the mouth toward the chin (marionette lines). Patients concerned about these types of wrinkles should consider the benefits of Restylane Defyne.

Restylane Defyne may offer the following benefits:

  • Softer appearance of laugh lines (nasolabial folds and marionette lines)
  • Natural expression (smiling, frowning, puckering up etc.)
  • Natural-looking results

Who is a Candidate?

Restylane Defyne may be an option for patients who have moderate to severe deep facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds.

Restylane is not recommended for individuals who:

  • Have an allergy to bacterial protein
  • Have a weakened immune system
  • Take blood thinners
  • Are under age 21
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

Before the procedure, patients should speak to their doctor about medications they are currently taking. If patients qualify for Restylane Defyne, they will need to stop taking the following before the procedure can take place:

  • Blood-thinning medications
  • Aspirin
  • Ibuprofen
  • Fish oil
  • Vitamin E
  • St. John’s wort

What to Expect

Before the procedure can begin, the doctor will apply a mild anesthetic to help alleviate pain. Next, the doctor will clean the injection sites with an antiseptic. To help determine how much Restylane Defyne is necessary, the doctor will consider the severity of the patient’s wrinkles. The injections will then be made using an ultrafine needle.

The entire procedure may take a few minutes to half an hour and patients are free to go home immediately after the procedure without making any changes to their normal routine.

Patients will typically notice full results within a week after the procedure. However, patients will also see immediate results because Restylane Defyne naturally adds volume once injected.

To maintain results, patients will need to receive additional rounds of injections.

Recovery

Normal and temporary side effects include temporary redness, bruising or swelling that typically resolves within a week. After the procedure, patients should limit their sun exposure to prevent exacerbating signs of swelling or bruising.

Side Effects and Risks

Patients may experience the following potential side effects:

  • Pain or itching at the injection site
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Tenderness
  • Headaches

These side effects typically resolve within seven to 18 days.

The risks of Restylane Defyne include:

  • Bruising or bleeding at the injection site
  • Allergic reaction
  • Infection
