Laser hair removal is a noninvasive medical procedure that uses a concentrated beam of light to destroy hair follicles and prevent or delay future hair growth.

    How Laser Hair Removal Works

Laser hair removal is an effective treatment for delaying hair growth for long periods of time. During treatment, a laser emits light that is absorbed by the pigment, or melanin, in the hair. The light energy is then converted to heat, damaging the hair follicles that produce hairs.

Laser hair removal may target hair in the following areas:

    • Legs
    • Armpits
    • Upper lip
    • Chin
    • Face
    • Back
    • Bikini line

Clients may need maintenance treatment to see full results.

    Who’s a Candidate?

Laser hair removal is an effective treatment for individuals with light skin and dark hair. Treatment is not recommended for tattooed skin or when there is little contrast between hair and skin color. Laser hair removal may not be effective for individuals with hair colors that don’t absorb light well: gray, blonde, red, and white.

Treatment may also be done for patients experiencing conditions causing excess hair growth, such as hirsutism and hypertrichosis. These conditions may be caused by certain medications, hormone imbalances, inherited disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome, and tumors that produce hormones.

What to Expect During Laser Hair Removal

The skincare specialist will begin by cleansing the area and giving the patient protective glasses to wear during the procedure. The practitioner will also put on protective eyewear before beginning the procedure.

Laser hair removal will feel like a series of stings that may be described as a rubber band snapping against the skin. Depending on the size of the treated area, the procedure may take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour.

    What to do After Treatment

After treatment, patients may have red, swollen skin and experience pain. It’s important to avoid exposing the treated area to natural or artificial sunlight. However, patients are free to resume daily activities after the procedure.

Once patients have begun treatment, they will need to avoid waxing, tweezing, and plucking hair in the treated areas.
