When to Start Preventative Botox

BOTOX® is a toxin used to prevent the formation of wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing muscles responsible for expression in certain areas of the body. The injection is typically used on the face to smooth out brow lines, crow’s feet, and smile lines created by the repetitive contraction of facial muscles.

Smile lines, for example, develop from repetitive use of the muscles of the face to make a smile, which leads to creases and wrinkles. Other factors can influence the likelihood of developing wrinkles, including genetics, sun exposure, and routine skin care.

BOTOX® will prevent the exaggerated movement of these muscles, smooth out the wrinkled areas, and prevent the formation of additional wrinkles. If you’re wondering when you should start getting preventative BOTOX®, here are a few things to consider.

Does Getting BOTOX® At A Young Age Prevent Wrinkles?

Frequent contraction of facial muscles, skin tone, sun exposure, genetics, diet, hydration, and other factors influence the likelihood of developing wrinkles. Preventative BOTOX® can help prevent wrinkles from forming by relaxing the muscles and diminishing their movement. This decreased ability to contract muscles reduces the risk of developing wrinkles.

One round of preventative BOTOX® injections will last for about three to four months, and sometimes up to six months, depending on the treatment area. It’s important to start BOTOX® injections early on, before the formation of severe wrinkles to prevent new wrinkles from forming.

Getting BOTOX® In Your 20s, 30s, and 40s

Preventative BOTOX® is recommended for individuals who have visible expression lines on their face when they’re not making facial expressions. It’s normal to see facial lines when the muscles are contracting to form a frown or smile. It’s when the lines remain after the face has returned to neutral that a person should consider preventative BOTOX®.

You can test this out by standing in front of a mirror, forming a certain expression (such as raised eyebrows or a smile), and then letting your face return to normal. If your face completely returns to normal and there are no visible lines, then you may not need preventative BOTOX®.

There isn’t a set time or age for when you should begin taking advantage of BOTOX® to prevent wrinkles. Every person’s features and aging process is different. Some individuals may not see any visible wrinkles or forehead lines following a facial expression until their 30s, while others might start seeing these lines in their early twenties. The bottom line is, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach for preventative BOTOX®.

Addressing Current Wrinkles

Often, the most prominent facial wrinkles are on the forehead and around the mouth. Some individuals have a very expressive face, which can cause them to form forehead wrinkles sooner than others. The same is true for smile lines. Frequent smiling and laughing can cause laugh lines to develop early on. For individuals beginning to notice these kinds of wrinkles, BOTOX® injections can help ease these current wrinkles.
